Hurricane Ike

Well for once the meteorologist have predicted correctly; Hurricane Ike was headed our way. We evacuated on Thursday and stayed with our Aunt Di in Austin until Sunday afternoon. It was a hellish time wondering what would be of our property, our neighborhoods, and our city but in the end we were very blessed. We can only thank God for that. We had our health, our home (which only had minor damage), and each other. Other's were not so lucky. My old and dear friend Jenny, who had just purchased her home this summer, had returned to find a tree punched through her roof/ceiling and sitting in her dinning room.

Coming home to Houston was a bit surreal. This has been the first time I had experienced the affects of a hurricane on my city. Oh, we came close before with the threat of Hurricane Katrina but in the long run that storm managed to take a different route and we only got side-swiped. Another close threat was with Tropical Depression Erin which dumped a lot of rain over our area. I remember driving home in our SUV with both the kids in their car seats and suddenly I felt the truck driving on it's own, as we began to float. Fear overwhelmed me as I prayed out loud and somehow(God's how)I managed to park the SUV on the side road of a nearby neighborhood. We were close enough to our home to walk, but I was alone and had to brave the blinding rain with 2 kids; one on each hip, walking through knee deep water. Here are two photo's from that storm experience: These are both photo's from our home property, the second photo from Hannah's bedroom.

Well that was then and now here we are facing Hurricane Ike. Ike wasn't planning on changing it's course and it hit Houston dead on. Thankfully all Houstonians responded quickly to the warnings and most people got out of harms way. There were still those irresponsible few that decided to stay behind and 'weather' (no pun intended) the storm. But all in all I think the city of Houston was cooperative and managed everything quite well. We are definitely glad to be home.
