A message in Yard Work???
Yard Work Today was a busy, laboring day for me. Even though my hubby was home I still have always enjoyed doing the yard work. (Odd I know) I was mowing, edging, using the weeder and blower to make our front and back yard clean and 'sharp' looking. Although I am still not the greatest with the 'weed eater' I still tried my best.
When I was doing this laboring tasks, (The reason I love to do this is because for me it is an awesome form of exercise.) I focused on two things 1) God, and 2) Keeping constant tabs on my two kids. Over and over again I'd find them a little too far, or simply not seeing them at all because they had went inside our garage or were behind the car or other side of the house. Over and over I had to turn off the mower and yell to them to come back to where I was. I explained that it's crucial to have them near me (especially since I can't hear them over the noise of the lawn machinery) at all times to make sure they are safe, but when they wander further and further from me I can not protect them, especially if I can't see them.
Constantly I called, yelling their names out for them to return back to where I was. They would stay near me for a brief time but then got distracted and wandered off again. After the 4Th time of them taking off out of eye range my husband took over and brought them indoors.
It was time to begin the 'edge' work and right away I started to reflect on Him. As I was edging I was trying to make the grass clear from the sidewalk to make our yard look tidy and neat. In doing so, I thought 'Today has been a day in which I wonder if God often feels about us?' I am the mother to my kids; their protector, nurturer, and safety net yet even still they were not sticking safely by me but instead always drifted further and further from me making it so hard to keep them under my care. I was often calling out to my kids as they continued to disappear from my view, making it impossible to make sure they were safe. Even if they went inside the garage, there were a lot of unsafe tools that would be harmful to them. I asked God 'Is this how you feel about us?; calling us over and over to stay near You because it is for our own good, yet at times we wander, sometimes straying further than we realized? Yet You are faithful and continue to call us, pulling on our heart strings to stay near You for You are our Fortress and Protector.' Christ is our Shield, Fortress, Hiding Place, Keeper, Lifter of Our Head, Refuge, Rock, Shade, Shelter, Protector and Stronghold. Psalm 91:1-16.
Later as I was completing my awesome edging (not a blade of grass out of place - not really, but I like to dream) I thought of how often God uses the edger on us as Christians. This brought me to think about Twitter, Blogger, Facebook, and other online networks. There is always the front page telling you to log in, but if you aren't already a member they ask you to 'Register Here' or 'Sign Up'. Since I am already a member of the Lord's I felt that the edger was just like these sites that I'm also already members of. Instead of introducing me to the site (or God and His Son the way 'Signing up' for Facebook would start off with introductions) instead He was pruning me, the way the my edging pruned the yard; removing the unnecessary, out of order grass and some weeds. In the same way that Facebook or Twitter do this; they know I am a member so now the introductions are done; they begin to further educate me about the many different ways I can further benefit my membership. Same with Christ.
As I used the edger I thought 'God too uses a different type of edger on me, using it to shape me into a straight and narrow path; His path, one that is uncluttered and clear, one that is used that helps me to see the entire sidewalk (or driveway) without distractions of sloppy, overgrown and unkempt grass. Interesting how my yard work turned into a teaching from Him using my own kids as examples of the importance of staying close to His side, and then using the edger to show how He uses 'other tools' to shape and keep me clean, focused, and righteous.
Below is a photo of our yard after I was finished: It wasn't perfect, but it was as trim and tidy as I could get it before my arms fell off (however we still are working on finishing the flowerbed).
Then here's the edge work I did on our sidewalk which made for a clean, uncluttered, and inviting sidewalk to walk down. (At least in my opinion.) :D
Below is an image of an unkempt, neglected, and messy yard, the way Christ does not desire our life to be lived. Can you observe how the overgrown yard is a distraction from the nice homes? Do you recognize how you don't even notice the other side of the street and how cleaned up it is? Just one unpruned yard, can be infectious and be a huge distraction and poor example for the one's who want to live a righteous, respectable, and honorable life that strives to be spotless and clean before Him. Interesting how my yard work had me in a place reflecting on Christ; reflecting on how He revealed more to me than just getting my yard cut.
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and good examples, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16.
I always admire a good edging job, and that's pretty darn good. You can mow my yard any time!
ReplyDeleteAnd I've always felt that yard work and spiritual lessons go hand in hand. Not sure how that is, but it's true.
Great post, Sarah!
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome post! Isn't it amazing when you are so in tune with Him that your heart directs your mind into thinking about Him, even in such a powerful way as when you were working so hard on the yard work and you were reminded of His fine pruning and so much more? He is such an Awesome and Powerful God. Oh how I love Him so.
I'm with Billy above. Great job on the edging. That's hard work. I know because I've tried it before and it does a number on the arms.
Again, I loved your post today and I'm glad that you are a part of my blogging world of friends now.
Hugs,
Alleluiabelle
Thank you Billy and Alleluiabelle!
ReplyDeleteLOL....I'm sure you wouldn't mind me edging your lawn....it's true that I really do enjoy the workout of yard work. I wouldn't have known how yard work and spiritual lessons go hand & hand either until I was calling my kids names over and over to stay nearby, in sight, and close. Never before had I pondered on Christ viewing his own children this way until I viewed this from a parents eyes. Thanks Billy for your positive feedback! :D
Also to you Alleluiabelle, is there a way to email you directly? I viewed your blog for an email but didn't see one. If you aren't comfortable giving this out publicly than you can just go to my 'contact us' page and leave me a message there. Of course only if you are comfortable with it....
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment; it's such a blessing to recognize how others see the beauty in the average daily routines of our lives and to relate it to Christ, and for you to notice how I was engaged in this as well. Thank you for seeing this. I didn't look for it; it just entered my brain thoughts wondering 'Hmmmm; God is this how you feel about me sometimes?' Yikes, talk about conviction! And you're so right; it did do a number on my arms plus I can't tell you how many times I got frustrated with the edger feed/stringy thing....UGH! Talk about controlling my temper every time I had to reload the thing! :D
Hugs back to you Alleluiabelle!

A great post, doing yard work and getting your spiritual food at the same time.
ReplyDeleteYou asked if I wrote the poem on my blog. No, it was written by W.J. Goodman I think. It was probably sent to me by someone in an email. I use to do a card ministry through my church and that was one of the cards I did. Sorry I'm not a writer but God always gave me something to use and pictures to go with them as well as scripture. It was amazing. I did it for about 6 years and after having back surgery 2 years ago I just did not have the passion for it anymore. Then I started a Bible Study on the Internet and felt God leading me to start my own blog. I've used a lot of the things that I put on cards.
I've seen some of the new Pledge of Alligiance writings but don't know if I've seen the one your talking about. I'll come back tomorrow and look.
Thanks for sharing,
From my heart to yours,
AliceE.
Ah, one of the jobs I have for today.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job edging...which I have found to be very difficult.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post.
Great post, Sarah. The photos of the unkept yard really drove it home. Good job!
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteYour words are an encouragement. I'm lovin' the site and I'll be back. Your words have taken wings today and flown straight to this missionary mommy's heart.
Blessings from Costa Rica,
Sarah Dawn
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI like the analogy you used about pruning and edging removing the unnecessary, out of order grass to reveal what it should look like being what God does for and in us. The pictures were a great visual to make your point too.
Great post!

Hi Sarah Cecilia! :-)
ReplyDeleteOn any given weekend in the spring/summer/fall, you can find me on the lawn mower belting out tunes like, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and "We're Marching to Zion" and "When We All Get to Heaven" and "Victory in Jesus." 'Cause mowin' grass just puts me in an ol' time religion mood. :-) I'm not sure that the neighbors appreciate it... But then I do a lot of things I doubt that they appreciate... Like walking my dog in my pajamas and flip flops. But hey, I gotta be me! :-)
Love,
Other Sarah
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteHey! I got my D90 at Best Buy. I shopped around online to find the lowest price, because my best buy price matched. Which is awesome. I bought the zoom lense and the external flash as well as an 8 gig memory card and the 4 year warranty that BB offers and my total purchase was just over 2000.00. But, I love it and think I got a pretty great deal for all that. The extended warranty was over 200.00 by itself.
Hope this helps.
Loved your post. I love it when God reveals truths and His love to us through our everyday activities. Thanks for sharing.
Hugs,
Mimi
God is constantly revealing himself and truths about himself to us through the world around us.
ReplyDeleteI love it when people stop to hear what he's teaching.
Great post.
I love your blog. It's very inspiring. Check out my blog, I nominated you for the Golden Heart Award.
ReplyDeleteI love this analogy you made here with your children in this Post! Isn't it so true though, we know our loving Father is our protector, we know where we should be, yet we sometimes sneak off and explore a little to far away from Him at times.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though your hard work in your yard paid off both physically and spiritually. =O)
Yard work with message. It's unimaginable how you come up with it. Wonderful message.
