I swore I would never do it, but last year I couldn't resist when my two young children had their leapster handhelds and the original price of the games are $24.99.  Well last year 'Black Friday' (Don't know why they call it that.) they had all the leapster hand held games at Target for just $10 each!!!  There were a few other items I took advantage of as well and truly in the end it really was a big savings.  And personally I didn't run in to any chaos or crazy shoppers like I feared.   So I for one, am going to ATTEMPT to stand in the long lines outside again only if there are great super savings on items wanted/needed.  Our family is planning a budget this year since last year we went WAAAAY overboard and overspent, yes, even with the savings from 'black Friday'.  If anybody asks us what our kids want we will kindly tell them we would really appreciate educational toys/gadgets/whatnot.  Of course we'll get them at least one nice toy that is non educational that they really long for, but other than that we really want to limit their gifts to just education, but fun education.

Here is a very disturbing picture; at least for us anyhow (actually I had to take the photo in sections to get the full affect, and this wasn't even the ALL OF IT!)    ; we took of our kids and ALL the abundance of toys that just our two kids got all in one day!!!!  My husband and I looked at this photo recently and realized that all these toys were WAY too much for just two kids ages 3 and 5 last year.  Not to mention all of those toys are a HUGE reason why

both our kids bedrooms are often a big mess.  AND, the toys, in our personal family opinions, isn't even the reason behind  Christmas anyhow!!!

So whatever you decide I completely respect it, as I have been on both sides of the fence with this.  Of course we've already asked my husbands parents if our kids can stay overnight at their home and they are okay with this.  So my biggest struggle now isn't anything except going to bed early (I'm a night owl) and making sure I really wake up to get in the lines early, like at 4 AM.

Now mind you, my husband and I did not get all of these gifts for our two kids.   It was a combination of us, and a ton of kind loving family and friends.  Now I don't know if this seems like a lot to you but even for us as adults we felt incredibly overwelmed!

  1. my mom, my sisters and i are black friday shoppers...it's more about the tradition than the savings. we go every year without fail. we live 45 min. from where we shop so it's a nice early morning time of christmas music, girl talk and a thermos full of coffee for each of us... none of us are ever really "bent" on anything...what we get, we get..it keeps the mood light and fun.

  2. Wow that was alot of loot. Our kids get way too much too. I do go out on Black Friday, but only because it is a tradition with my mother that we have done for years. I enjoy our time alone together. She is fun to shop with. I dont' really come home with much but quality time with my mom. Worth the crazy people in all the lines.

  3. My mom and I used to go shopping every Black Friday. We loved it. Seems in years since the sales were better after that day. I mean you can get awesome deals on an item or two since you can't be in several places at once for early birds. If you have a group of ladies to spread it out and than meet for lunch...yeah...that's good idea! lol

  4. Sara, that's a good way too take it into stride; by not getting 'bent' over anything but just feeling good about what you 'get' and keeping the mood light and fun. If only more shoppers shopped this same way too!

Mimi, that sounds great that you and your mom have this quality time one on one! Are you saying 'It's NOT worth the crazy people in all the lines or it is?' Still it's nice ya'll have that tradition so strong; I'd love that! :) (Yeah, my kids got WAAY to much last year and we really didn't like it...sounds funny I know, but we just didn't...it made their rooms a huge mess (even when I put some items up in their closet for rainy days) and it really distracted them from the whole meaning of Christmas.) We did end up giving some of their toys to children less fortunate later though, but it wasn't easy. I had to wait for them to 'forget' about some of what they had and do it alone with a few items.

Same with you Richele....that's awesome you and your mom share that shopping time together like a tradition. I agree; to me that's the hardest part...you can't be in several places at once to take advantage of the good deals unless you make out a good plan with some ladies you trust. I would SO try to work something like that out but none of my family or friends care to get up that early in the morning with me...(sniff, sniff).

Those early bird sales really are worth getting up so early just that one day to get some incredible knock off prices on certain things!

  6. Just thought I would fill you in on why it is called Black Friday. You might be familiar with the accounting term "being in the black" meaning, making a profit. For most retailers, the day after Thanksgiving is when they go from being in the red to being in the black. Thus the name, Black Friday.

    Blessings!
